Kalashayna Littlemoon has always dreamt of becoming a dragonrider. When her father forbids her from the Trials which would grant her entry into the Guard–because her mother was mysteriously killed in action as a dragonrider–Kala takes matters into her own hands. Kala plans a secret journey to compete for a place in the Guard in the nearby city of Marneris and by the faith of the dragons, is Chosen.
Kala quickly learns that, despite being Chosen during her Trials, the path to becoming a dragonrider is not easy or assured. She must deal with a despotic Guard Master, unscrupulous trainees, difficulties with her dragon’s bond, the mystery of her mother’s death, and cantankerous Scholars as she navigates the increasing difficulties of her training. Kala must choose her path; will she become the quiet, biddable dragonrider the Guard Master wishes her to be, or will she remain true to herself and her dragon?

Aleya has watched the dragon that lives near her home croft ever since she was a little girl. She lives on the croft with her two parents, and her mother’s sister and her two sons. Her cousin, Liam, is constantly malicious, and makes no secret of his desire to take over Aleya’s croft.
When Aleya is 19, the dragon dies, leaving behind two eggs and gifting Aleya with memories and knowledge to take care of the kits once they hatch. Shortly after the dragon’s death, Aleya is attacked while in the nearby town during a market day, raped and left in an alley. In shame and embarrassment, she vows to never return home, and dedicates herself to raising the dragon’s young. A few days after the kits hatch, a wild dragon attacks Aleya’s croft, destroying it and killing her parents.
When the dragons grow too large for her to care for alone, Aleya seeks help from another croft. When the dragons are old enough to fly, Aleya decides to return to her home under an alias to reclaim it for herself.
Her cousin, Liam, has married into a poor croft and is abusive towards his wife. With the help of the town’s leaders, Aleya traps Liam and confronts him about the attack on her in the past; he was responsible for her rape. When Liam attacks her in rage, she is protected by one of the dragons she has raised, and is forced to reveal her true identity.
With a loan from one of the town’s leaders, Aleya is able to reclaim and rebuild her croft. Her protective dragon takes over the territory left abandoned by the dragon’s mother.
